Architect/Engineer David Tuvia, like other architects of the time, modified his style from the eclectic to the modern without having studied at the Bauhaus School or any other educational institution in Europe. Tuvia’s architectural style in the 1920s was characterized by eclecticism influenced by classic architecture. However, during the 1930s he began to plan buildings based on the principles of the International Style which emphasized curving forms and long horizontal lines. Tuvia is responsible for many of the edifices that are referred to today as ‘The White City’; a collection of over 4,000 buildings built in the unique International Style such as Poalim Alef (literally the Worker’s Neighborhood) which included David Ben Gurion’s home, many water towers, the famed Ophir Cinema on Gruzenberg St., the Balfour High School on Mazeh St., The Davar Building at Melchett St. corner Shenkin St., the coffee house on 2 Bialik St. and his own private home on 16 Mazeh St.
